MARCH & APRIL 2007

There is a remote, little visited, small bay on Phi Phi Don (the main island), Ao Lok Lanah, where there was a small settlement; all who were living there are closely related to one another.  The tsunami completely destroyed their houses, which were situated in a very beautiful palm grove.  At present only the concrete foundations of the houses remain, covered in weeds.  I had a conducted tour by Khun Songpol Wongna, the assistant headman, whose father was one member of the community who died.  On arrival, the first thing I saw was the newly installed tsunami warning sign, which gave a weird feeling in the otherwise very quiet and peaceful surroundings.  Another organisation has built 8 new houses, but they could not be used as there was no water supply or electricity, so when I visited, it was a ghost establishment, with a strong feeling of desertion.  Phi Phi AID has bought a generator, to enable the community to be re-united and start a new life.  I understand it has been installed, but I have not yet had the opportunity to re-visit.
