Dear Sir,
It is almost a year since the Tsunami hit South-West Thailand where I have been a resident for more than 14 years. Much justifiable publicity was and still is given internationally about the volunteer force from many countries after the tsunami. It was, and continues to be impressive and is very much appreciated. However, not enough recognition is given to the work the Thais themselves have done, and are still doing. I offered my services as a volunteer at Phuket’s Provincial Hall on 27 December, and wish to express my gratitude to my friends, the Thais, for the amazingly good work they performed. No-one was prepared for the disaster, which was on an enormous scale. The Provincial Hall premises teemed with people, but without delay provided room for Embassies from many countries to establish themselves there; officers from the Thai Tourist Police and Immigration Office created order from a state of chaos; meals suddenly became available for anyone in need; translators appeared from nowhere, so it seemed; free transport was provided to the airport, and free flights were arranged to many destinations; Thais organised many other services: the list is endless. On 31 December I was sent, as a volunteer counsellor, to Wat Yang Yaow in Phang Nga, which was used as a temporary morgue. The morbid job of accepting and dealing with huge quantities of corpses was performed by the Thais with dignity, efficiently, respectfully.
I am the founder member of Phi Phi AID, a UK based charity specifically for the tsunami suffering community of Phi Phi Island. Phi Phi AID has completed many projects, and will undertake many more, but would have been unable to identify the need for these without the expert advice of a Thai national, who also works closely with Krabi’s Governor. I am in the process of helping with the arrangements, as part of the tsunami commemoration programme, of a visit to Phi Phi Island on 25 December of 21 Buddhist monks of various nationalities who will offer prayers and counselling for those in need. I am grateful to the Thai Government for making this important event possible.
Yours faithfully,
Frederik J Jurriaanse
